FINALLY one of us was able to ride the Bike Tour of Colorado! The tour is 7 days total, starting on Sunday and ending on Saturday with one day of rest somewhere cool. The location of the tour changes every year. This year’s tour is over 470 miles started/ended in Gunnison and was nicknamed the "Ride the Divide" becasue we crossed the Continental Divide 3 times. I have outlined the days for the 2010 tour: (I rode over 350 miles but was not able to ride all of it….next year I will!)
Day 1: Gunnison to Creede, 106 miles, two passes: Slumgullion at 11,361′, and Spring Creek at 10,901′ very long and steep day! Dinner inside a hillside!
Day 2: Creede to Alamosa, 80 miles, an overall downhill grade with the first 30 miles downhill-ish and then the rest flat with a strong headwind
Day 3: Alamosa to Chama, NM, 77 miles, over 2 passes: La Manga at 10,230′, and Cumbres at 10,022, STRONG winds all day. A few cyclists used "Americas Longest & Highest Narrow Gauge Railroad" to get to the top of the mountain….wish I had known that!!! It dates back to 1880! and happen to be damaged by fire just after we were there! (On July 6th the train ran again!)
Day 4: Chama, NM to Pagosa Springs, 51 miles, rolling hills, shortest day, cool scenery
Day 5: Rest day in Pagosa, filled with playing in the springs, river, eating, relaxing, shopping, oh…and resting
Day 6: Pagosa Springs to Center, 75 miles, one pass: Wolf Creek at 10,850′, my favorite day…nice climb, nice and long down….high max speeds! The school in Center played Avatar in the auditorium…I hadn’t seen it yet. Nice treat!
Day 7: Center to Gunnison, 97 miles, one pass, North Cochetopa at 10,149′ and the end of the tour…..ready to not sit on a bike seat for a few days!
A super fun trip…hopefully we can both go next year! The trip was fantastic, something I have always wanted to do….over 30,000 calories burned in one week! We made out like bandits in the raffle winning jersey’s, coats, t-shirts, DVDs, hats, etc…… Am already planning next years trip!
Lets go RIDE! (see pictures in the photo section!)
